Digital Graphic Design 2010 Grad ExhibitWelcome to VCC’s Digital Graphic Design Program

Do you look at event posters with a critical eye? Do you sometimes think “I could have done that better myself”? Are you the kind of person who reads magazines and notices the way articles are laid out as well as their content? Would you support a bylaw banning unattractive transit shelter art? (That’s not going to happen, but wouldn’t it be nice?)

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, chances are good you have the potential to become a graphic designer, so please read on to learn how we can help you make the transition from potential to job-ready.

Our nine-month certificate program will prepare you to face the design industry’s various demands. In the DGD lab – as in the workplace – design problems, time constraints, technical know-how and professionalism must be addressed on a daily basis. Bring your creativity and eagerness to master a spectrum of technical solutions, because both will be essential to your success in this intensive program. To put it another way, we can promise you two things:

We’ll work hard. You’ll work hard. And you’ll have fun. (Okay, that’s three things.) read more »

Like any industry – in fact, often more so – graphic design perpetually changes and evolves, both in terms of visual trends and the techniques employed to produce them. With this in mind, we’ll provide you with real-world clients and simulated design projects. You’ll be given ample opportunity to learn the latest techniques, design principles and processes, as well as to conduct research, hone your analytical thinking abilities, and work with others.

If you can visualize your future self as a bona-fide graphic designer, you’ll need to make that picture a group shot, as in all likelihood, you’ll be working with other designers, suppliers, art directors, and – most importantly – clients. Of all these folks, clients represent your most influential critics, but don’t be intimidated: you’ll be well prepared. Critiques, from instructors and fellow students, generate creative solutions and stress the importance of function – after all, pretty is as pretty does – no matter how “cool” a piece may look, if it doesn’t convey the client’s message effectively and adhere to the elements of good design, it needs to be reworked. For these reasons, critiques play a vital role in the program.

Your training will be relevant and thorough, encompassing not only projects and critiques, but also discussions on industry opportunities, professionalism, determination and other factors instrumental in helping you reach your goals.

Career opportunities abound for individuals equipped with the right combination of design and technical expertise. Upon graduation from the program, you’ll be qualified for a wide range of graphic design positions in various industry sectors including design firms, advertising agencies and print houses. In addition to developing a marketable skill set, you’ll also build a solid portfolio designed to help you in your pursuit of employment or admission into degree-granting art institutes. Rest assured that you’ll be supported in your future endeavours by experienced, knowledgeable Faculty determined to see you succeed.
